STORYLINE:
Closing the final session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) at the United Nations (UN), Secretary General Ban Ki-moon highlighted the need to accelerate the momentum for meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The latest session of the CSD, which took place amid Member States’ growing concerns over the impact of unsustainable patterns of human consumption on the environment, climate, food, water and health- sought to help transform development strategies and lifestyles.
In his closing statement Ban reflected the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthen the resilience of vulnerable countries and communities.
With the upcoming September 2010 MDG Summit in mind Ban stressed four points to be focused on; first, practical decisions to be translated into action and scaled-up; second, all important decisions should be concrete and with time-bound goals; third, build links with other international bodies; and fourth, the organization should “we must continually assess performance and progress.”
Also looking forward to the Rio + 20 summit in 2012, Ban pointed out that “we have a responsibility to future generations to implement what we have pledged. Good ideas are not enough. We need focused action. We know what we need to do. We know what works. The time for delay is over. The time for delivery is now.”
